Softball Heaven

It was my turn up to bat, and the score was tied. My adrenalin was rushing through my entire body. I looked down at the plate, and back up at the pitcher. As she starts to wind up, I set into my stance. And that’s when it all happened. That very second, I saw the ball getting faster and closer. The last thing I remember I remember is waking up onto a softball field. I could see clouds everywhere, and it was white and misty. I was so confused, it was like a big part of my life was missing. I stood up and looked around, I noticed that this field wasn’t familiar. As I got up, I heard a voice say, “You don’t know where you are, do you?” I recognized that voice from somewhere. The person started walking closer, but I still couldn’t make out the face. Finally, I saw my great grandmother. She looked exactly how she did the last time I saw her. She was wearing a pink and white dress with her short grey hair all curled up. I rushed towards her, and wrapped my arms around her. As happy as I was, I was just even more confused. How is this even possible? I looked up at her and said, “Grammy, I don’t mean to be rude, but what are you doing here?” She laughed and said, “Sweetheart I’m your guide through softball heaven.” I looked around again, and noticed a large golden gate made out of softball bats. “ Emily, your gonna learn three things that will take you very far in life,” she said. She explained how there were three levels of softball heaven, and how there was some type of award at the end. I still couldn’t get over the fact that I was even dead.
As we walked through the gate, it was like we walked right into a movie set. Flashes and people were coming from everywhere. We walked a little more, and that’s when I couldn’t believe my eyes. Standing in front of me that very moment was Marilyn Monroe. She was incredibly beautiful, and posing for a camera. As I watched her pose with such passion, she looked over at me, and said, “I know this looks aggravating, but I love acting!” “It’s like I was born to do it,” she said. I smiled really big while my grandmother knelled down and said, “This is the first level, the level of passion.” She continued and said, “To go anywhere in life you have to have passion for what you like, and what you want to do.” “She’s right, you know,” said Marilyn. “my entire life I’ve been passionate for acting, and look where I ended up.” A man from across the room called her name for the next scene. She gave me a hug, and said, “No matter how hard softball really gets, you have to have passion for it to take you somewhere.
As we walked away, suddenly another gate appeared. It was the gate to get into the next level. I grabbed my Grammy’s hand and pushed it open. As we walked in, it turned into a basketball court. I heard a big buzzer go off, and the audience screamed and cheered. A basketball game had just ended. “Where are we?” I asked. “We’re in the second level, the level of teamwork.” my grandmother said. She pointed to a man in a black suite, and said, “You see that man?” As I nodded my head yes, she continued, “That’s Jim Valvano; he’s the head coach of NC University.” “In 1983, he won the NCAA tournament in men’s basketball.” He noticed my Grammy and I, and walked towards us. He introduced himself, and said, “Do you play a sport?” I answered, “Yes, I play softball for my school, and for a travel team.” “Do you guys win a lot?” He asked. I was kinda silent for a little bit, and said “Ya, sometimes.” He chuckled and said, “Teamwork is what wins ball games, Miss. Emily.” “I’ve been there and done that, and I know what it takes.” “That’s why I’m here today, I played on a team, and I coach a team, and you can’t do anything with out teamwork.” “Just remember there’s no ‘I’ in team; just a few words of advice for the next time you step on the field again. “ He shook my hand and said good-bye. Talking to Jim Valvano really made me think how important team work really is. My grandmother took my hand, and said, “Come on.” As we walked away, a third gate finally appeared.
This is it the level I’ve been waiting for. As soon as I opened the gate, I could hear the Charlies Angeles’ theme song. I could see a group of people with makeup brushes and blow-dryers getting a girl ready for a photo shoot. I could see long, big, blond hair from the back. “Who is that?” I asked my grandmother. She smiled and said, “Why don’t you go take a look?” I walked slowly towards the lad, but before I could get there the chair turned around. It was Farrah Fawcett. My mouth dropped to the floor, while I watched everyone dress her up like a Barbie doll.
When she turned around she lifted her hands and said, “Wala!” “Welcome to the last level Emily, the level of the hard working.” “This is the most important level, in softball heaven” she said. “Hard work and dedication is what I did to get here.” “ I worked everyday and every hour for modeling, and look at me now. To get what you want you, got to work 100%. Work hard to make it in life, and you wont regret it, I pinky promise.” I gave her a big hug, and thanked her for everything. We walked out of a secret door and appeared where we started.

“So did you learn anything?” my Grammy asked. I thought to myself, and nodded my head, I learned that passion, teamwork, and hard work will take you far in anything you want to be, or do when you grow up. If you really want something you need to go above and beyond. That was my reward, and I will always cherish it for a long time. Grammy wrapped her arm around my neck, and we walked together across the softball field.

This is my favorite piece of writting this year. I really showed how much I understood the project. I fallowed all the steps, just like you would when your about to catch a wave.
